Laid in the 1730s, Gorohovaya Street is one of central Saint Petersburg's major thoroughfares, extending from the Admiralty to the southern part of the city, crossing the Moika River and the Griboyedov Canal, and ending at Zagorodny Prospect. It has always been a wealthy district since the rich noble Russians built their mansions here. Many celebrities lived on Gorokhovaya Ulitsa: writers Nikolai Gogol, Alexander Herzen and Ivan Turgenev, composers Pyotr Tchaikovsky and Mikhail Glinka, the favorite of the Imperial family, Grigory Rasputin.

Bolshaya Morskaya - one of the main streets running perpendicular to Nevsky Prospekt, connecting Palace Square with St. Isaac's Cathedral - became home to jewelers, who were attracted to its proximity to Nevsky Prospekt and the largest Gostiny Dvor (indoor market) in Russia, thus, the residents of St. Petersburg gave the street the informal name Brilliantovaya (Diamond). Bolshaya Morskaya street used to be so posh and so rich back in the old days boasting popular restaurants "Café de Paris" (popularly "Cuba") and "Dusso" and the famous «France» and «Belle Vue» hotels. Gorgeous commercial buildings, numerous grand aristocratic residences, banks, trading houses and jewelry stores standing side-by-side turned this street into one of the most prestigious residential areas in St. Petersburg.
